Staged Heritage: Glass Slides Between Public Education, “Preservation of Local Heritage,” and Ideology
A collection of glass slides, cataloged at the Volkskundemuseum Wien (Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art) between 1927 and 1937, illustrates how folklore knowledge was organized, conveyed, and publicly staged through images in the first half of the 20th century. The slides served as projection images for lectures and in teaching, but at the same time point to the (cultural) political contexts of their production and use. More than half of the series was donated to the museum in 1936 from the collections of the Verein Deutsche Heimat. The motifs focus on traditional costumes, customs, religion, field monuments and small monuments, as well as work.
